About Straw

Straw is a desktop feed reader used for reading news, blogs, “planets”, etc… within the GNOME desktop environment. More info about the project as well as contributing can be found in our project site at http://www.gnome.org/projects/straw”.

We also have a wiki for collaboration, ideas, etc… Feel free to read and make a comment on our (future) direction, goals, etc… at http://live.gnome.org/Straw.

I am a build manager and we use Hudson as our continuous build engine. Hudson, like most continuous build engines, offers a variety of RSS feeds for monitoring builds.

On Windows systems, you have RSS readers like Alert Bear that operate out of the Windows System Tray and display new RSS feeds as they come in.

I was looking for a similar tool for the Gnome Desktop, and found Straw. Straw doesn’t quite do what I want, but I noticed that there is a Bugzilla Issue #535040 that is almost the type of feature I’d be looking for.

What is missing from this feature is the ability to briefly flash the RSS feeds as they come in and a way to display recent RSS feeds without opening Straw itself. Both of these features are found in the Mail Notification tool that is on the Gnome desktop.

I would have put my comments directly into Bugzilla, but I didn’t want to create an account just for this one request.

I’ve been trying out the gnome desktop and came across this site. Is development done on the straw project, I realize this is an older post and the link says the last update was in ’08. Is there any compatibility issues with gnome 2.32, or can you recommend another rss reader.

To whom it may concern, I have started my own project of an offline rss/feed reader called Naufrago! You can find it at sourceforge (naufrago.sourceforge.net).

    Cheers.

  6. hey jors,

nice work so far. Go on with your work.

    Best regards

  7. Feed readers have become pretty much open to either form of web site syndication. Now you can read either format with most feed readers and if you are using a feed reader that does not accept one or the other, you can always go to feedburner.com to convert your RSS feed to atom or atom to RSS. So no matter what type of a feed a site offers you can always get the newest content using any feed reader of your choosing.
