This update is triggered by bornagainpenguin’s comment in the last blog entry where he asks “Straw is dead, isn’t it?”.
Yes, I broke my own promises on delivering the release.
Yes, there is very little development activity.
I don’t want to say that the project is dead even if this is how it looks like to the outside world. Ideas are there, even the code is partly there (I still use Straw as my primary and only news reader – it’s been over a year and a half now I think).
Unfortunately, the time to develop is not there…
See the current vision of the project:

The Discussion Tracker (sort of a “semantic news reader”) direction is a great and exciting one from development point of view. And I am sure that it would provide very unique features to the users.
It all hits the wall when confronted with the real life – be it jobs, families, universities etc.
At this point I won’t promise anything. The project is not dead, let’s call it a transition period. It’s not just word play – I really want to find the time to develop, it’s just not that easy these days…
Please don’t misunderstand me–I don’t WANT Straw to be dead, it’s just that whatever happened with Ubuntu when they made the switchover to Jaunty has broken the application and without an update there is no way to fix the application so it runs again.
There seems to be some action on certain feeds, but none at all on the rest, and the same feeds work fine in earlier versions of the application and earlier versions of Ubuntu.
I’ve been bumping near daily trying to find a fix, and was hoping one of the developers would see the error report and have a fix for me. To come here and see the comments page filled with nothing but spam just disheartened me beyond belief. I left a message anyway, hoping there was something in the site software that would notify people someone still cared–and there was no response at all for quite some time, hence my posting about Straw being dead.
Again, I don’t WANT Straw to be dead–as far as I know it really is the only truly offline feed reader and I need that desperately on my eeepc, because not everywhere has WiFi.
I’m not asking for new features here, I’m just looking to make what has worked continue to work as it has before.
Thanks again for your time, your response, and most of all for Straw such as it has been!

Is it still a transition when nearly a year has passed since the last message from the developers and most distros have begun removing the application? Sure it is still possible to install the application manually if you install a few libraries and ignore error messages and remove the python-adns which for whatever reason causes the program to hang… but even that gets harder and harder to do as various libraries needed by Straw change their names and undergo version bumps.
Could you guys forget about the new features and at least do the minimum editing that is required to keep the program installable in most repositories? If new features are absolutely necessary, then by all means add them–but what good are new features if the program can’t even be installed? It has been years since I could just install Straw without issues and no activity seen by the developers to fix the situation. How patient are we required to be?

Ich hoffe das Starwreader noch einmal verbessert wird und es in Zukunft noch weitere Updates geben wird.
Even if I desire Straw the best of all futures, I started my own personal & little project of an offline rss reader as long as I was looking for one and I couldn’t make Straw work. The project is called Naufrago!. The current release is 0.3 and you can find it at the project page at Sourceforge (I am not putting links in this comment in order to try to get it published). Regards.
You realize so much its almost hard to argue with you.

Too bad that there has been very little development activity. I am still hoping for news on a new release in the coming months. Keep us posted on it.

KINGMAN, did you have a look at Naufrago!? (You can find it at naufrago.sourceforge.net). It is too an offline feed reader and it is also looking to extend this feature one step further (fetching also the web resource the feed entries point to). Cheers.
I can’t believe some of you guys are still crying about Straw, like this was the only feed reader available. Move on. As jors mentioned, take a look at Naufrago. Looks promising and I’m sure it will be improved even more in the future.
Good luck,
Jeremy

first of all, i heard that using tap water can be deadly… i used tap water so i’m a little worried. second of all, i decided to use it because i’d run out of breath at night and can’t sleep.
lol, guys, take a few secs to read posts above…
P.S. Few days after playing with Naufrago I have nothing but good things to say. Neatly organized and has several languages available. Already recommended to my ‘geeky’ friends!

How can I keep the program installable in most repositories? I’m a new guy:)
Keep us posted on it please!
We want new releases!!!
without an update there is no way to fix the application so it runs again.
Looking forward to news on the new update. I think straw reader is still relevant.
